If genderswapping is generally considered ok in fanart I don't see why race-swapping would be any worse. Just let them imagine, who gives a shit

welp

Because the SJW idiots will come in here and claim that race - swapping in fan art is akin to alive actors being in blackface or some other shit like that. That's their MO.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
SJW say that PoC can appropriate white characters and turn them into PoC because they are oppressed minority so they can do whatever they want and you're evil if you criticize them or say that the characters are white.

Then I guess I'm an evil bitch then.

+1

really, who gives a shit. ppl who get hung up on this are way more suspicious in their intention to me than people who change the race with some thoughts

Except that don't use thought most of the time. It seems to me that they spot a character with stereotypical 'brown' characteristics - like a certain hairstyle or freckles or ever-so-slightly darker skin tone - and bam! Now they are a generic brown person.

But if a character is blonde? Untouched. Funny that.

Honestly I have seen ONE artist draw a character as actually black, with proper features, than just drawing the same character but using a darker skin swatch. Because all non-white people are just white folks with dark skin, don'tcha know.

If people occasionally did some fanart of one character being another race, that's cool. I've seen some people do it, and it's neat.

But it's not occasional. IT'S CONSTANT. There's a few artists who ALWAYS draw Marco/Bertholdt/Ymir/etc as very tan or brown-skinned. That's like gender-swapping a character but always drawing them that way, even when drawing canon scenes.

da

I'm not seeing the problem? So what if they're constantly drawing them as having tan skin or dark skin. As long as they aren't forcing people to accept it as canon and are just having fun, I don't see the problem. Same for constantly drawing genderswaps.

Because like I said in the secret, some of the most commonly recoloured characters are actually antagonists from outside said white-dominated society, so the brown 'outsiders' are trying to kill the innocent white people. You don't see how that actually ADDS some skeevy racism to the setting?

Not to mention that the most of the favorite characters that are getting recolored are usually only chosen because they have a SLIGHTLY tanner skin tone in the canon or they have freckles. Apparently that means that you're brown. If it was just redrawing characters for fun why don't they race-change the blonde and blue-eyed characters?

(FFS one of the characters seems to only be picked because he has his hair in a short buzz cut. Guess if you have a steretypical 'black' hairstyle that means you're black now!)

That's like, as I said, gender-swapping characters permenantly in your works but only picking the 'girly' guys or 'macho' female characters. If you want to add diversity for it's own sake or just for fun then, y'know, put some damn thought into it instead of always choosing characters with arbitrary 'brown' qualifiers but leaving the whitiest people untouched.
