That's stupid as fuck.. Change it to to "All characters in anime/manga living in Japan are Japanese unless stated otherwise" and we'll have a deal.

Because there are tons of anime with no Japanese characters. I'm watching some old Gundam shows right now, most of the characters have no nationality because they weren't born on Earth, I don't see why I should assume that they are all of Japanese descendant.

Rereading that first line it sounds bad. I wanted to say "there are tons of anime with characters that are not Japanese", not that there were no Japanese characters at all.

If you're talking about UC Gundam, there's actually a faq info about what ethnicities the characters are. Some are Japanese, like Mirai Yashima and Hyato Kobayashi. While others are mixed raced or other races that aren't white. Only Sayla Mass, Char Aznable, and Bright Noa are confirmed to be European. It's actually a pretty diverse cast.

Unless you're talking about another old Gundam show. Then idk.

I was thinking about Gundam ZZ, that's the one I'm watching right now. None of the kids have Japanese names or look Japanese, so I'm assuming that none of them are Japanese.

Gundam ZZ is actually considered part of the UC Gundam timeline (along with Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, Zeta Gundam, 0080 War In the Pocket, 0083 Stardust Memory, MS Igloo, MS Team, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam F91, and Victory Gundam). I guess I was using only MSG 0079 examples, so I didn't make myself clear on that. But you'd be correct in assuming that ZZ Gundam cast is just as diverse.

My last reply seemed a bit passive aggressive and I apologize for that. Thought you were being pedantic. I get your point, I really do. There's quite a few anime/manga not set in Japan that includes a mostly Japanese cast and I thought my wording would cover those instances.

Right now I'm watching Gundam ZZ, and I can't say I like it that much, but I don't want to skip anything, so here I'm, forcing myself to watch the episodes. It's sad, I loved Z Gundam and 0080 so much, two of my favorite Gundam series, but ZZ is so damn boring.

I'd like to, but at this point I think I'll wait for the anime, if it ever happens.

Favorite characters: Char, Sayla, Kamille, Emma, Haman, Tieria, Soma and Lockon I. I think I could list even more characters of 00, it was my babby's first Gundam so I'm very fond of it even if the second season was terrible.

There's supposed to be more Gundam news in March so maybe it will be announced then.

That's quite a nice list of characters but I can't say much about em. I've only seen two Gundam series. Both AUs.

Hey anon, even though G00 wasn't my first Gundam, it's my favorite (and I agree, S2 was awful. Have you seen the movie? They didn't make a better job), so which of the other Gundams you've seen would you recommend to me? (I started with GWing and GSeed -although dropped, I couldn't stand all the drama-)

Can I ask what episode you're on? Because that's exactly how I felt about ZZ Gundam too until around episode 18ish (maybe even 20). Then it was like wham episodes everywhere with lots of intense battles.

25, the one where they fight some guys in the dessert. I liked some of the first episodes with the crazy guy with the rose, he was hilarious. I'm liking Puru and now that Haman appears from time to time isn't that bad, but my main problem is that I can't stand the main characters. All those kids are just too annoying.

Ah ok, my episode timing was a bit off then. After you get past the desert episodes and with Glemmy's self reflection, things start to pick up. You'll see plenty of Haman later on.

I also agree with the main kids being annoying tbh. Well except for Lino Abbav, since he was the sweetheart and voice of reason in the group. Some of them develop as characters later on and get less annoying. Though personally, Beecha stayed annoying till the end.

You know, it probably goes further than that. Japanese people might forget and see white or vague Europe-based fantasy anime characters as Japanese even when they're not, just as a lot of white people will forget and see Japanese anime characters as white when they're not. That's probably why Japanese creators tend to give characters the same skin tone even when they're setting the thing somewhere other than Japan. They really just forget that not everywhere is as racially homogeneous as Japan.
