tumblr itself

but i'd be okay if "excuse me, but" "can we talk about" "let's talk about" and similar bullshit were stricken from the lexicon

Yeah, it's sometimes kind of scary how you can tell who uses tumblr a lot by how they type.

Eh, not completely. I do sometimes use those terms and I only lurk on tumblr once in a blue moon.

I personally love the different linguistic styles that pop up on the Internet with passing trends. Not to say they can't get annoying - I just think the phenomenon is interesting. I saw this one article about how people exchanged their LOLcat speech for doge talk.

You can say that of various sites and communities though, and even within fandoms even. While it's rather esoteric that those phrases almost "tell" you that they're from tumblr or wherever else (eg: >implications implications), it's pretty much just average communication on tumblr that's pervasive enough to be used outside of it.

I guess I don't find it that remarkable other than thinking they picked it from there or elsewhere?

Scary probably wasn't the right word, but it's pretty interesting to see the disconnect from the mostly casual, but fairly standard English used here (with a few exceptions of course) to the some of the more extreme tumblr typing styles that are used. Like, the ex,,,cessive c,omma use, ~tilde emphasis~, and whatever "tHIS THING" is.

I mean, yeah, obviously all communities will have their own lingo and ways of talking with a few typing styles in the mix, but I feel like some of tumblr's communities are especially noticeable because of how people use a lot of non-standard modifications to express themselves.

No. Just. Don't even.

(...I will admit, I use phrases like that all the time, and I tumbl pretty infrequently. I've just kind of absorbed them.)
