Since people are putting series names in the character name thread... Let's just go with it and have a "titles that are cool" thread. :D Movies, shows, songs, books, art, whatever.

Me, I like the title of "The Hands Resist Him" more than I like the painting itself. Hum's "Downward is Heavenward" has a nice ring to it. Pretty much every Paper Chase song/album is interestingly named.

I really like the title/first line "Do not go gentle into that good night" more than the rest of the poem.

Also, "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" has enough body horror for my imagination already, I don't really want to read it.

Harlan Ellison is a rapist and an abuser of women. You should not support his works.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
....

Proof anon? Because I get that he's a crotchety old prick (especially when he protests every fricking time travel story, claiming it's stolen off of his Star Trek story), but what proof is there that he's a rapist and an abuser of women?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
... I never said I would support it, I actually said I wouldn't want to read it, and even so, I'd probably not buy it?

Also, I know he's an ass but give some proof if you claim someone's a rapist. Try learning this for your everyday life, too, unless you want to end up getting sued for slander.

The title of 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' is what drew me to it in the first place. I really liked the story too, it was horrific and will probably give me nightmares for the rest of my life.

"I Have No Mouth..."'s title drew me to it, while I was browsing the Sci-Fi category on Wikipedia. But after reading the small summary, I was already too horrified and did not attempt to read the whole story.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too. In a way, the summary made it seem like those grimdark brony fanfics - a bit too much of everything to still be taken seriously, but still uncomfortable to read.

Some of my favourite book titles:
- The Lighthouse at the End of the World
- The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
- A Clockwork Orange
- The Wounded Sky
- Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
- The Devil's Dictionary
- The Wind Through the Keyhole
- The Word for World is Forest

And then there's my all-time favourite song title ever: "Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse" (It's a damn good song too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgG8lAVh-EA)

I've always thought 'The Word for World is Forest' is an awesome title.

OMG that is one of my favorite books. Like, I always heart UKLG but that book is something special.

The South Park episode "With Apologies To Jesse Jackson." Best title ever.

Also "In the Pale Moonlight" the episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9. It sounds like a lyric from some old melancholy traditional song about lovers meeting one last time before war or death or something.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure it comes from "Copper Kettle," a song about running a still:

Get you a copper kettle
Get you a copper coil
Fill it with new made corn mash
And never more you'll toil

You just lay there by the juniper
When the moon is bright
Watch them jugs a filling
In the pale moonlight

According to [script writer Ronald D.] Moore, the title of the episode was a reference to the phrase "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?" from the film Batman.

Trek has the best episode titles, especially TOS and DS9. "Let That Be Your Last Battleground", "The City on the Edge of Forever", "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", "In the Pale Moonlight" - and then all the great allusive ones, "Far Beyond the Stars", "It's Only a Paper Moon", "... Nor the Battle to the Strong". I don't know, I really like those titles that give you this really melancholy poetic sense. I mean, "The City on the Edge of Forever" - has there ever been a better title than that, for anything?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
heck yes; TOS titles are the best

+1

All the ones you listed, Anon.

I really like the Cordwainer Smith titles "Scanners Live in Vain" and "The Game of Rat and Dragon."

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Other titles I just remembered, from James Tiptree:

The Snows are Melted, the Snows are Gone
Her Smoke Rose Up Forever
The Man Doors Said Hello To
Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Imagine me giving you a massive high five. Also for Scanners Live In Vain, but especially Tiptree.

I've said it before but 70s sci-fi had the best names ever.

I like "Take This Waltz" even if the movie looks unappealing to me.

Joe Hill's novel NOS4A2 is one of only a handful of works that the title alone made me want to read it.
