Can't it be both?

i.e. use inspiration of your favorite stories/characters to go have adventures, even if it's just a small thing like trying a new restaurant or a big thing like traveling to somewhere you've never been before. Then, when real and day-to-day life gets a bit much for you, try finding refuge in fandom.

It doesn't have to be one or other, OP, and it's never too late to try something new. :)

I second this. Fandom is what first inspired me to go travel on my own (for cons or to meet other fans). It became an acquired taste, and now I'm nearly looking for fandoms as incentive to choose what place I'll go to next (because otherwise I'm a procrastinator or I end up thinking it's not worth the trip / expense / time spent).

Of course this requires a bit of money and not everyone is that lucky, but you may find yourself able to try that on a smaller scale to begin with.

Amazing comment. It's never too late.

To the OP, when I start thinking like this about life, I think about my mother who first traveled to America (we live in Europe) when she was 60 and now she's 70+ she makes regular trips to France where she has friends. My mother and my older sisters are my main inspiration, fandom can be one too. Even if it's just in a small way.
