Look, I don't give a cow's ass about the diversity of the cast, but I really don't see why you're so fucking angry about people drawing the characters how they like. Why does it have to solve a problem? Can't it just look pretty and make people happy that like that stuff?

Because they're trying to solve a 'problem' - not enough brown folks - despite the white-dominance making PERFECT SENSE in the setting and unintentionally making it more racist by making some of the 'outsider' antagonists non-white?

Look, I love fix-it fic, I do. It's why I love making fanfic myself. If they wanted to make an AU setting where everyone was more racially mixed because of a new setting, sure, why not. But thinking that adding some darker skin tones somehow fixes the canon work? Please.

Can you give me any other possible reason as to why a fanartist would randomly decide to turn multiple characters into brown people in all of their works, even scenes set in canon?

I can't think of a single other reason. I've drawn AU stuff before, drawing non-humans as humans, or humans as aliens, or genderswaps, or whatever. But I can't say I've ever looked at a character, changed their design, and then kept them that way forever just on a lark.

Other people in this thread have argued 'aesthetics', but if that's the only reason, why not make the blonde and blue-eyed characters brown? Why not give them rainbow colored hair? Why not make them sparkle? I really doubt that 'aesthetics' is the sole reason why an artist would select only a few characters and turn them brown Just Because.

because it comes across as being more than a little fetishistic? it's reducing a character's importance/awesomeness down to their skin color, because you're basically saying "i'm going to make this character better by making them a different race!" as if race is the be-all-end-all of whether or not a character is good or interesting. and i find that more than a little fucked up.

it's fucked up when people whitewash characters and it's just as fucked up the other way around. you're not "improving" a character by changing their race.
