Why, Les Mis fandom? :(

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really know what I'm hoping to gain from posting this, I guess I just need to vent.

A little while ago I submitted this secret (https://31.media.tumblr.com/bee9ba5d0209e462ad83d3d4681de8b2/tumblr_mzps0cTROG1sf77vro1_500.png). And I've just found out that someone apparently tweeted it to the two actors.

And I just... feel really weird about it. I mean, I'm very anonymous in the Les Mis fandom and there's literally no way anyone could know that I made that secret. But I made it a secret for a reason, you know? That reason being that it's not something that should really be publicised. I'm usually pretty open about my ships, even a lot of RPF stuff (but only to other fans that want to hear about it), but with the West End Les Mis fandom being such a small one and with the whole 'RPF not usually done in theatre fandoms' thing, tweeting it to the actors feels even more out of line than normal. Because compared to other celebs they don't get that many tweets directed at them and there's probably a huge chance that they actually saw it and that makes me feel terrible.

I don't know if what I'm feeling is second-hand embarrassment that someone tweeted it to them, or regular old first-hand embarrassment that I made the secret that they tweeted.

I mean, nothing has come of it; if either of them did see it they appear to have just ignored it, but still. They seem like such nice people and I really hate to think that something I said/made might have made them uncomfortable or something. Argh.

Once you put something like that up on the internet, you lose the right to control what happens to it. On the other hand, the person who tweeted it to the actors is just warped and gross.

Yeah, I understand the loss of control thing. I guess the tweeter's lack of courtesy just bums me out...

Oh, me too. I don't even want to know what goes on in the head of the person who thought that was a good idea.

This is literally crap. You own the copyright on the letters you write, the vids you make, and the fanfic you write.

But I agree that there was no call to tweet the secret to the actors.

Re: Why, Les Mis fandom? :(

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
And how exactly would anon go about establishing their copyright on a secret that they don't want anyone to know they made?

Re: Why, Les Mis fandom? :(

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
You don't own copyright on anything unless you apply for, pay the fees for, and are granted said copyright privileges. It's not an automatic thing, you have to put effort into it.

And the so-called "poor-man's" copyright trick of mailing it to yourself in a sealed envelope is BS.

Re: Why, Les Mis fandom? :(

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
That's completely untrue. Copyright is automatic, it's just harder to prove if you don't register it.

At least they haven't made them read out someone else's slash fanfiction at a press conference. Yet.

True. That just had to be humiliating for everyone involved. =/

Eh, what the first anon said re: nothing on the internet being truly private once you post it. That said though, yeah... The person who tweeted to the actors crossed a way bigger line than you did.

Honestly I wouldn't feel too bad about it. Yes, it's theatre and they don't have to deal with nearly the number of fans that say Cumberbatch or Hiddleston or JLaw do, but it is still entertainment so part is accepting that fans will speculate about your personal life. And as long as it stays in that speculation zone and doesn't involve into stalking or harassment, I think it's fine.

And if it does keep bothering you, then just take it as a life lesson learned and don't post about it again in the future.

(But really, go easier on yourself, anon.)

I suppose. I'm sure I'll get over it, I mean, I'm not humiliated, just a little embarrassed. And like I said above, I know FS isn't a private comm, but it sort of pisses me off that someone found this and didn't take a second to think about why I submitted it anonymously to a secrets comm, instead of shouting it from the fandom rooftops.

Aww, you didn't mean for that to happen so try not to feel too bad.
