Re: What constitutes a crack pairing?

Pretty much that. For me, crack pairings are crack pairings because they're totally wacky like Sauron/Merry because why in the name of god would it ever enter anyone's mind to ship it, or totally wacky like Samwise/Eowyn because it's not AS crazy but they have never interacted so it's theoretical at best.

Those are good examples. You should have seen my face at Sauron/Merry. Though at first I thought it said Saruman/Merry and I guess that isn't quite so much out of nowhere because he had ordered them brought to Isenga...ok I'm done.

LOL- I have seen the face of Library of Moria and what you've described is all too plausibly a fic you'd find there.

I miss LoM. I used to stroll through it looking for the most WTF pairings I could find.

Sauron/Merry

... Doable, in a horrible, possessing-Merry's-best-friend sort of way? If you factor in Sauron's brief mind-connection to Pippin via the palantir, and posit a Merry/Pippin-possessed-by-Sauron scenario ...

And I don't know why I'm saying this. I need to stop taking crack pairs as challenges.

Oh, good, I'm not the only one whose mind immediately went there. (And now I want to try writing it.)
