Her comments are thoughtless and unintelligent because she makes sweeping assumptions and generalizations on a person's character based on incredibly shaky "evidence." According to her, he is a "gender bigot" because a form letter was sent out to a woman saying she can't be an animator in the studio, despite the fact that this was a universal policy not unique to his studio, he had women working on inking and coloring, and he ended up having women animators by 1941. He's also apparently anti-Semitic, despite donating to many Jewish charities. Judging a man from the early 20th century by our standards in 2014 is idiotic. He's no saint, but he's hardly the misogynistic anti-Semite she tries to paint him out to be. He wasn't perfect, but no one is.

You can certainly make judgments on a person's character without ever knowing them, but if you make your opinion out to be a fact (like she did) then you sure as hell better have some strong evidence to back it up. Her "actual letters and events" referenced are taken out of context, and make her look like a fool when she might be an otherwise intelligent person.

But Disney was a racist though. That's something you can not dispute.

No one's disputing that he was a racist, but simply stating Walt Disney was a bigot, sexist, and racist person oversimplifies the relationship he had with those issues.

Streep was not JUST saying he was racist though. She was saying he was a gender bigot, and anti-Semitic, when evidence points to the contrary. And like other people have pointed out elsewhere, it was considered culturally and socially acceptable to have racist views during that time period, so it seems bizarre that everyone likes to point fingers at Disney for being racist when just about everyone (ESPECIALLY in the movie/entertainment business) was to some degree.
