(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 04:59 am (UTC)(link)I personally disagree, but the thing about Watson (and Holmes too) is that they have so many intriguing empty or ambiguous spaces in their characterization that there's loads of room for multiple different headcanons that have equal support (or lack thereof) from canon. I think a big reason everyone liked Law!Watson and Freeman!Watson is because they are both quite different from all their predecessors in several ways, but still canon-compliant in the sense of tapping into and expanding those "what if?" hints.
It's the ones that go explicitly against canon evidence that are the problem...*eyes long history of Rathbone-influenced rubbish*

It can be a positive thing, but mostly I see the whining of people saying 'It's nothing like the original!!1!!' as 'It's nothing like I imagined it to be!!1!!' And I'm not just talking about Sherlock here...
