I believe there was an extra thing Lemony Snicket did, perhaps that 'Letters to Beatrice' thing, and there was a drawing of their boat all smashed up...I think it was kinda implied that they crashed and died before getting back to the mainland.

I personally reject that. :C Not after all they went through, that's not the ending I want...
