I constantly find myself thinking about the heroes' thoughts regarding this one-time thing.

I always get tripped up by that in stories/media that have a historical or historical-ish setting with poor forms of contraception and a significant stigma toward single mothers. Like...do they really think this is a good idea right now?

Yeeeeeah. Though of course people aren't/weren't always reasonable when it comes to teh sex, it rubs me all the wrong way when it happens to protagonists who are supposed to be quick-witted and have some control over their desires.

Which is why I love the fact that the Hornblower series has Hornblower marry with this very thought in mind and produce a ton of children over the course of the next volumes. (okay, not a ton, two. But the second one does come almost immediately after the first one, as is to be expected when they are both healthy and use no means of contraception)
