So what's been happening in season 9? What's this about angels inside Sam? What's up with Cas?

Cas became human- lost his grace.
Sam was really messed up trying to close the gates to hell so dean tricked him into being possessed by an angel so the angel could heel him.
All of the Angels that have been expelled from heaven have split into two factions and are basically fighting it out like its a gang war.
Dean lied to sam/ kept the fact that he was possessed from him so he wouldn't fight the angel healing him.
Dean/ Sam/ kevin kept crowley locked up as a prisoner to be the deus ex machina when they needed answers.
Abaddon is trying to take over hell while crowley is absent.
Cas kills another angel to steal his grace and become an angel again.
Metatron offers the angel possessing sam a chance to get back into heaven if he does metatrons dirty work.
The angel agrees- killing kevin and anyone else metatron wants him too.
Dean, Crowley and Cas track down the angel and help expel the angel from Sam.
Sam is pissed at Dean for lying.
Dean feels like shit and leaves.
Cas and Sam try to track the angel that possessed him.
Dean and Crowley try and find a weapon that will kill abaddon - turns out the only weapon that can belongs to cain (as in cain and abel)and caine will only hand it over if dean agrees to bear the mark of cain.
Dean agrees without asking about any of the consequences like a moron.

Oh for fuck's sake, do they ever bother with any other mythology outside of Abrahamic religion anymore? (Monster of the Week episodes don't count).

I thought the show was supposed to be about general Supernatural shenanigans and two Hunters that went around solving Supernatural crimes or mysteries or whatever, but Tumblr seems to show that it's really the Angel and Demon Show - so which is it? Or is it a case of starting out as one and morphing into the other?

It started out as a show about two brothers hunting supernatural things, in specific the thing that killed their mum and the youngest brothers girlfriend but it eventually morphed in to a show about angels vs angels vs demons vs demons, with some humans thrown in there. The show today is generally about the brothers trying to stem the tide of Angels and demons on earth and their dastardly plans but they also do go off on MOTW hunts every now and then as well (generally these eps are fillers).

What on earth happened to Sam and Deans angel protection spell Castiel put on their ribs?

Because that has been bugging me for ages, and I don't know if I missed the explanation?
