I seem to recall awhile back someone posted here expressing frustration with a fic

...which killed off one half of a pairing just when they'd finally achieved happiness after chapters and chapters of angst, or something. Children might have been involved. I don't know.

Well, I need to express MY frustration with a fic I just read, which after chapters and chapters of lengthy meandering revealed itself to be a fix-fic, undoing a canonical death! My OTP got together and there was hot smut and much schmoopy reunion-related tears, and just as I'd finally convinced myself that I shouldn't feel ashamed to read this, the author killed off the recently undead character AGAIN. Why do people do this?

Why? What is the point of bringing them back only to kill them again? I mean was there any spec of plot for that move? Ugh, I'd be so frustrated if I read that.

I know! Literally the first half of this 20-chapter story was about the surviving partner mourning his dead lover, and I was like, okay, that's what this is gonna about, I can roll with that. Then bam, ALIVE! The chapters that followed were all about how they still couldn't really be together because reasons but in a way that led you to believe they would be together in the very end. But nope, DEAD. You might as well not have bothered, the canonical ending was both better written and more emotionally satisfying.

Because they're sick bastards who like the manipulate emotions? Oh wait, canon does that too.

I feel ~betrayed~ when fanfiction does it, though. Author, you're supposed to be one of us.

lmao, mte. It's the worst when that happens. It sounds like a long ass fic too, which makes things even more frustrating. (I once read a big bang where half of the main pairing died at the end as well. I was so angry and sad; that ending stayed with me for days.)

...Maybe it was because of a kink meme fill or something? I know I've written some things that are kind of WTF just because there's a kink meme prompt that asks for something that's so WTF I really want to see if I can pull it off. Sometimes it works better than others.

Wow, damn D8 I've killed off characters in my fics, but doing this is just damn nasty. I'm sorry, Anon.

(Which fandom was it?)

That is freaking terrible. I mean, what's the point in that?

I remember there was a long fic in my fandom (that never got finished thankfully) where the pairing getting together was a really long and drawn out thing. When they finally had sex, the character topping was not the one who was expected to be (it's a MxM slash pairing) and it just turned a lot of people off. The resulting wank was great.
