Not at all. Shariah law is just the law that has been laid down in the Quran and in what Prophet Muhammad said. The reason it's often separate from other law is because it has some laws that are conflicting with the normal view. The one I can think of off the top of my head is interest, which is banned in Islam. Obviously non-Muslims would think that incredibly silly, so the law ends up being separate. So banks that declare themselves to be Islamic and follow the shariah can't have anything to do with interest in their dealings, and if they do, they can be brought to shariah court.

Yes it does, thanks! Sorry to have asked that, but pretty much all I've heard basically boils down to "It's horrible to non-muslims!" and "But it doesn't apply to non-muslims!" ...without anyone actually explaining [and probably not even really understanding, I suspect] what it is.
