Here Islam is more of a culture than a religion, and while it has its downsides, it does mean that there are things like community iftars (the meal you eat when you break your fast). I love it during Ramadhan when everybody goes to the mosque to pray, the mosque usually prepares food, both for Iftar, and for after night prayers (Iftar is usually around 7, night prayers end at 10). There are a lot of close-knit Muslim villages where everybody goes to the same mosque every day and whenever there's a wedding or something, everybody pitches in to help (engagements usually take place in mosques). Islam is a lot about community and I think that's why Malaysia is so big on family and friendships. One of the worst things you can do in a Malaysian's eyes is shun a family member.
