"Cultural appropriation" is not a bad thing

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about things like blackface, that, as far as I'm concerned is not "cultural" appropriation, if you want to give it a buzzword other than simply "Racist" would be "racial appropriation".

I'm talking about adopting styles and traditions from other cultures.

Cultures are designed to be "appropriated" cultures are deigned to be shared and passed on and adopted by new people not originally from that culture.

A culture that does change and adopt new elements from other cultures is a dead culture.

That's all, just something that was bugging me.

I agree.

I feel like society, at this point, is in some weird "We want everyone to mix and be friends BUT YOUR PEAS CAN'T TOUCH MY POTATOES" limbo...

Yep.

The whole "removing meaning from sacred things is disrespectful" argument has some holes in it, too. I'll put forth the idea that once something is removed from its original meaning and context, it ceases to be that thing as such, and is just a similar object or depiction of whatever it's supposed to be. Kind of a "ceci n'est pas une pipe" sort of deal.

Agreed. Racism and racial stereotypes are a genuine issue, and I do think it's not absurd for people to be offended when others use things they take seriously out of context...but, I mean, that's people. That's culture. Things change all the time. I'm not 'culturally appropriating' whoever when I wear feathers in my hair, feathers are pretty and I like wearing pretty things in my hair dammit. If I wear a kimono I'm not appropriating Japanese culture, I'm saying "Somebody made a fucking awesome design for a dress and I'm wearing it cause it looks good on me."

Like, I've herd people bitching about an artist 'appropriating Indian culture' because they used a sitar in a song...bitch, it is a freaking cool instrument and they are showing their appreciation for it by using it.

As an archaeologist, I can tell you that cultural appropriation is the historical norm for all of humanity. There are obviously ways to be an insensitive asshole about it, but imitating your neighbors is just what people do.
