Re: Irritating misinterpretations of characters in fandom and/or adaptations
I hate being defensive about characters, but I get so rankled about Jason getting distilled into "the violent one, who was not muh robin, that got himself dead with the help of a shitty poll." The not muh kinda is discounting the older incarnation that was pretty much a Dick clone. You nailed it; troubled kid with a background and childhood that was not conducive to typical cape heroics, and Jason died because the Joker exploited his vulnerabilities.
And it bothered me that DC seemed to miss an opportunity when they brought him back. He could still be a crooked sort of guy, but at least recall that he was more than just his murder. Now I like Morrison's run on Batman and Robin, but you even have his take on Jason as a turn for pathetic. Oh, secretly a balding ginger that is shit at being anything and anyone. Genius. /bitter
I'm really curious about what you think of Jason in the reboot though. Red Hood and the Outlaws is one of the few books I liked, and they really did a hard reset on his "i'm back and completely insane" personality imo, although he's been granted an oddly-overpowered skillset out of nowhere. I think that him being implicitly on brotherly terms with Tim, and their relating to each other, was a bonus for me since it leaves Jason more as a wayward son that may never come home, but is still (bat)family.

1. Batman caught him pinching from a medical clinic, not the wheels from the batmobile. That ticks me off because one thing I adored about Jason is that he had the sheer balls to rip off THE BATMOBILE and then smacked Batman with a tire iron when confronted. (Not to mention that Jason was a good kid who only stole to survive. He would not steal from a goddamn clinic.)
2. His birth mother not being an evil bitch and selling him out. It seems cruel, but it is a major source of Jason's massive need for validation because as far as he sees it two of his parental figures backstabbed him.
3. The Joker somehow magically setting all of these events in motion to create the Red Hood. Not only is it another example of God-Joker, but it steals away Jason's agency and heroism.
I do like the idea of Jason eventually making amends with Tim, but that's something that needs a lot of character development. Jason hates the very EXISTANCE of Tim as Robin and it would take a long long time for Jason to be at peace with his 'replacement'. You can't just say 'oh they're cool now' because that is a story that should be shown.
I also like the concept of Jason hooking up with other outsider heroes and kicking ass together, but I never liked the execution.
