I have never had a problem bringing an empty water bottle through. I hook my nalgene onto my backpack for every flight (about four-six times a year). Granted, mine doesn't have a a filter, but the one my mom had for a long time did.

Regarding cards vs. cash, up thread... it kinda depends. Some counters give you a different story every time you go through, so it can be rather inconsistent. I'd take both, just to be safe. And it never hurts to have cash on hand, aye?
