Illegible secret is illegible.

I honestly don't know this book, but I found many "classics" to be quite unpleasant to read.

The only part of this secret I could read was the "dropped it like an ugly baby" part.

You probably shouldn't drop any baby regardless of how ugly is may or may not be.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Babies are made for dropping.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
In fact that's what I'll do.

One of these days these babes are gonna be dropped all over you...

To quote Gormenghast:

TITUS falls to the floor, wails. A shocked silence, broken by DR PRUNESQUALLOR's high-pitched nervous laugh.

PRUNESQUALLOR: Hahaha! They resemble rubber, your Ladyship! Just a core of India rubber with an elastic centre. Every ounce a bounce! Hahaha! Every ounce a bounce!

COUNTESS: What are you talking about, man?

PRUNESQUALLOR: I was referring to your child, who has just fallen ...

Or perhaps... I was made for dropping you.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I got the line from the title of the game Kick It!: Drop That Beat Like an Ugly Baby.

As for illegibility, I'm sorry. (Though surprised--it looks fine on my phone, and that's hardly a convenient reading platform.) The upshot of it is that I really wasn't happy with the way this book un-gayed its lesbian lead.

I'm seconding what kallanda_lee said: many classics aren't that enjoyable. I've never heard of this one though.

I understand this book's a modern classic, but I still dropped it like an ugly baby when I realized the cool, calm laywer who'd only been attracted to women was going to fall in love with the big, strong, manly black guy.

Seriously could there possibly be a more stereotypical way to turn your gay lead straight? And at least give them a chapter or two to bond before you start writing about the guy in that stupid florid way bad writers always writing about the love interest.

[Background is buildings with Southland, the title of the book, on a sign.]

I had no problem reading this secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Read this for a class once. (Seriously, professor, if you're going to assign a mystery novel, then don't spoil the end before the class has read the assigned chapter. Nope, not bitter at all.)

[personal profile] escriboconundedo 2014-01-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
well, that's a fantastic way to get pwople to not like reading.

330 x 330 secret with tiny font. *sigh*

[personal profile] escriboconundedo 2014-01-28 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
i haven't actually readv this nook, but i will say that i hate hate HATE when gay/lesbian characters are turned 'straight' over the course of a narrative. it's like, alright, you either totally phoned in the whole 'representation' thing, or you have skeevy notions of homosexuality and how it works -- e.g. 'you're only a lesbian because you haven't met the right man yet' or some such bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that the way all fanfic writers treat straight characters? I mean I haven't read the book either so I don't know how it's treated it but there is a thing called bi.

The OP was wrong about this book though, she gets together with a chick in the end...

Or the character is bisexual.

(Not saying this is the case here; I've never even heard of this book. But, you know, bisexuality is a thing.)

Modern classic?

It musn't be much of a classic, because I have never heard of it or even seen it in a bookstore.

Based on what you describe, I wouldn't want to read it, either. The whole "gay except for the attractive male character" thing is just old.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yyyeeeaaaaaahhhhhhh I would drop it like hotcakes too. Ughhhh.

/lesbian

I never read this, but it sounds pretty shitty.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
I HAD NO PROBLEM READING THIS.

WHY ARE PEOPLE HAVING PROBLEMS.

MAYBE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR DEVICE OR YOUR EYES.

Hey OP, I guess you didn't finish the book because SHE DOESN'T GET TOGETHER WITH THE DUDE.

She gets together with (SPOILER) the chick, the other lawyer chick? Rebecca or something?

I had to read this for a class, and I didn't think it was that great, although the fact that the areas it took place in were ones I knew was kind of cool. I have to admit that it did kind of seem like she was going to get together with that dude... but she didn't, so.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-28 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
That would annoy me, too, OP.
