to your latter point -- i don't think fandom is so much the culprit there as cultural narratives of love and romance in general. we're kind of raised on this idea of 'true love' and how it's the single most wonderful and fulfilling thing that someone can experience, the obsessuion with ships in fando is just an extension of that.
