I have to agree about them being very flat characters. I kind of felt they could've been excluded from the game and nothing would have changed. >:

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... if they weren't in the game, Sora would have just chilled, helped rebuild Hollow Bastion a little, etc. He wouldn't have even had to look for Riku much, since without the fight with Roxas, Riku wouldn't have been hiding.

Hate them or not, they were what moved the plot.

[identity profile] dorkage.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The only members that were actually important to moving the plot forward in KH2 were Roxas, Axel and Xemnas. The others didn't do jackshit except prance around and look pretty.

Saix capturing Kairi doesn't count, because she would have run into trouble sooner or later after escaping from Axel.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but they were Organization members? And the statement was that if the Organization weren't there, nothing different would have happened.

Which just isn't true, because regardless of whether or not half of them were unimportant, they were still the antagonists. And the same happens with any group of antagonists in videogames - Zargaabath, Bergan, Ghis, and Drace don't really influence the plot of FFXII much, and it's not like anyone even remembers half of the ShinRa execs from FFVII. But they were still part of a major group of antagonists.

[identity profile] dorkage.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't my statement, so it can't be used against me. :p

FF7 isn't really a good comparison. ShinRa isn't the real antagonist in FF7, so it would be understandable that some of the minor characters aren't all that developed.

Then again, Sephiroth isn't all that developed either. But I digress.

And even so, Scarlet still has way more personality than Demyx. JOHNNY is better developed than Demyx, and he's only in FF7 for a minute, tops.

Don't get me wrong, I love KH to death. Nomura just failed big time at making his villains work, and it's upsetting that half the fandom only cares about making them fuck each other than worrying about how they completely LACK personalities.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I would disagree on the Johnny thing... most people don't even know who he was? It's hard to be developed when you don't have a single line in the necessary script, imo?

I really don't get what's wrong with liking characters. Okay, sure, the fandom likes the organization. A disproportionate amount of people like a group of characters, and... how does this really affect anyone? Maybe it's that I usually don't like popular characters, but I've never really cared what characters were popular.

If people want to like characters you don't like... what's the matter with that? I can't stand a bunch of popular characters, but that doesn't mean that the people who like them are invalid for that in my opinion?

I don't like the Organization porn fic. Not everyone who likes the Organization thinks they ought to be banging, and I don't know why I see that said so much in the comments to this post. I don't like the highschool AUs, either. I don't like a lot of the KH fanfic tropes. They're badfic for a reason.

I agree with you. I don't let things upset me that will never directly affect or concern my life. Live or let live, you know? It always bewilders me how fandom can fail to grasp such a simple concept, that would no doubt make their lives a little easier.

[identity profile] dorkage.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want to get really technical, Johnny leaving Midgar has to be acknowledged before you leave Sector 7. You don't necessarily have to speak to him, but the game distinctly shows him leaving as you're headed towards the exit of Sector 7.

Besides the point: Despite the fact that Johnny is barely remembered in fandom, he still has his own story. A lot of the Organization members don't even have that.

On the subject of what people like, I stand by this argument: If people are allowed to write whatever they want, I'm allowed to not like it, and freely express my opinion.

It's kind of hard to give characters backstory that just sort of... appeared and have no memories of their previous lives. That said, I do agree with you as well, that there was no empathy for the characters and that they were sort of just cut out and stuck in to be fanon fodder. They all pretty much shared the same backstory and motives, even those "rebelling" against the Organization, but other than the typical "we is bad guys" versus "we is repressed bad guys who wants to be bad without being bossed around," no, they didn't get much story.

Of course, if they each did, it would have been a considerably longer and more tedious game. Character quality sacrificed for character quantity, I s'pose.

[identity profile] dorkage.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just going to hope that 358/2 Days gives the Org the characterization they deserve. Really, they're capable of being incredible villains. I'm willing to give them another try.

What [livejournal.com profile] ayn504 said, really.

I kind of have it out for the whole Nobody idea anyway. I thought it was silly and it ate up KH2, leaving out what made KH so awesome in the first place: the combination of Disney elements. Going from world to world felt so POINTLESS in KH2. At least in KH there was a REASON.

So I guess I'm biased because I never liked the entire Organization from the very start. ^^;

Going from world to world felt so POINTLESS in KH2. At least in KH there was a REASON.

And the fact that some of the worlds were just horrifically bad rewrites of the movies. Granted, there was a little bit of that in game 1, but in game 2 it just slammed me over the head. *coughLIONKINGcough*

EXACTLY! SO glad I'm not the only one who went 'WTF IS THIS?' when I was playing KH2. The thing I loved about KH is that Sora being there and the Heartless being there CHANGED stuff in the Disney worlds. In KH2, Sora and the Nobodies were just... there. Being pointless. It made me sad. :(
