Eh, it is though? I mean, it can get really annoying - but it's generally got a completely different intent (and a nicer one) behind it.

Intent doesn't really matter. What matters is the message, that being stuck in a bad situation is your fault, regardless of circumstances outside your control. I don't accept that.

"[T]here's nothing standing between you and your dreams but yourself" pretty much says "If you don't get your dreams, it's because you don't do enough to achieve them." I don't really see how that's any nicer.

Of course, while I recognize that it's a fallacy to say everyone can get everything they want if they just work hard enough for it, I do think there are a lot of people who don't want to work or sacrifice at all for what they want, so none of these phrases, including pulling oneself up by bootstraps bothers me in the grand scheme, only in individual instances.
