Yes, but keep in mind, 4chan is full of idiots.

Not that time

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-01-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure you did't mean to call me an idiot there.

But that day, there was no idiocy. Wonder Woman needs to look like she can kick your ass at first glance. That's part of what she's about. She puts the "Strong" in Strong Woman. (and the "Warrior" in Warrior Woman)

Gal Godot does not strike me this way. And that is a body type that is gonna be hard to bulk up enough.

I mean for fucks sake, they had this lady in the same movie...

no way casting was accidental here. They want a different look for wonder woman. The wrong fucking look.

Nooooo, of course not. I would never.

Save the judgement until we see some actual stills of the movie or hear more about what they'll be like. It could be terrible, but right now, all this "she' too thiiiin!" whining is just that - whining. Remember when Heath Ledger was announced as the Joker and everyone said he was a talentless prettyboy and that everything was ruined forever?

This is more like if they cast Dylan O'Brien or someone to play the Joker. She looks seventeen and like she weighs ~100lbs. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but she was clearly cast because they were focused on getting someone young, super pretty, and feminine, not someone right for the part. Of course, I would love for her to beef up and blow everyone away with her performance, but right now it just looks like the people in charge said "Waaah, the menz won't want to look at a tough, bulky Amazon for 1.5 hours, we have to cast someone dainty and gorgeous."

God, why didn't they announce Gina Carano for the role. Even if literally everything else was unspeakably awful, a powerhouse athlete and passable actress punching people for two hours would have made the price of admission worth it.

Augh, why did you have to remind me that they could have had Gina Carano play Wonder Woman and they didn't go for it?

I thought the new DC reboots were all about gritty realism. An MMA fighter who could actually kick ass as an ass-kicking Amazon warrior would have been fucking perfect.

Instead we get a twee actress who weighs like 98lbs.

Fuck this earth.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
A few people have criticized the choice because the actress is very thin model. She hasn't been in much, and nothing that I've seen, but I've heard tends to play the "sexy female side character".

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously their argument is that she's too skinny? Do they not realize that that could easily change if the actress trains or bulks up or....really, too skinny?
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-01-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, a lot of women don't like to bulk up for roles because they fear it hurts their casting chances in the future. They are probably right more often then would be good. So there is fear that

A. She's not gonna bulk up all that much.

and

B. they dont' want her to cause look who they cast for wonder woman.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Plus it's hard for a lot of women to bulk up, especially skinny women.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Not that hard with the right amount of trainers, time, and money.

That being said, skinny can be strong too. I think it's ridiculous that people are complaining because the actress is too skinny.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-01-29 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
can be strong? yes. But that's not the kind of strong wonder woman looks like.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
WW is a warrior from a society of warriors. She's going to have muscle. We've seen plenty of strong, skinny women kicking ass, it's not an issue that needs to be addressed. Meanwhile most of the muscular women I've seen are kind of archetypal and they usually die. It would be nice to see a warrior woman who actually looked the part while still taking pride in her femininity and women in general.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
"pride in her femininity" whut

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
She wasn't butch or "one of the guys". Not sure how else to explain it dude.

Yeah, but once you've bulked up it is hard to slim down again unless you've got the right metabolism. That's another reason that actresses are less than keen to muscle up for roles (it isn't as bad as fattening up for a role though, different mechanisms).

This. I'm scrawny and it is hard to build muscle.

That said, I agree that we should wait until the movie comes out before raging about the actress.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fat, and I put on muscle like an OX.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's partly that she's too skinny and partly that the choice implies a whole bunch of stuff about the producers and their point of view on the movie.

In fact, I think that's probably the bigger issue. It just creates a lot of doubt in my mind about what they're going for, and what they consider the important character attributes of Wonder Woman.

She's only average height too. And that is using the old average since more and more women are hitting the six foot mark. They could easily have gotten a properly tall actress. And there is the Israeli thing, which won't be a factor within the US, but will have an impact at the international box office (shock info, Israel-not that popular overseas) which seems like setting up to fail since the international box office is now far more important than US domestic.
