I hate trying to find that weird like, empty spot in the middle of your brain where the magic voice comes out with little effort and sounds amazing and you never find it again.

Yessssssss. Although I have been getting better in a weird way.

Before I started taking lessons, I was comfortable with getting up to F and G above the staff, and anything above that was pretty much a 50/50 shot depending on how my day was going. Now anything between an A5 to Eb6 above is usually smooth sailing, but I have trouble with E, F, and G5 since they're right in my passaggio (even though I didn't before?), and I'm torn between wanting my body to just do its own thing and find that magic spot again and drilling between "okay, breath support. mouth shape. upper lip tension... fuck, what was that last thing i was supposed to remember? ugh, why the fuck is my vibrato not coming through. oh... wait... wait, there it is... and fuck, now the note's over anyway."

This is why my coach always has to like, poke me mid-note because I get so rigid trying to keep everything in mind and make it worse instead.

Another singer over here!

Oh God, that happened when I did my cover of Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper" and I only think I got the sound I did because I cried the WHOLE time. Then I cried during the video, too. I make music videos to my song covers to help me get the message of the song out and Skyscraper is so damn personal to me. It's a really dark part of my life. I belted the last part out and normally the part I belted are notes I could only reach with my head voice. Something magic came over me.

I don't think I can replicate how I sang it if I tried. It just HAPPENED.

The crying actually might have helped there physically. My sweetheart of a coach reprimanded me gently for something (I was about 15) but she caught me hormonal and I burst into tears. As soon as I calmed down a little bit, I started singing again and my voice came out so much richer, it was amazing and weird.
