because guys aren't encouraged to keep up appearances/hygiene as much as women are,

You've never lived in the women's dorm.

I've seen messy rooms just as bad as the guys (the mess is just more likely to have a unified color scheme), people not showering unless they're going out for the night, pajama pants everywhere (this has changed a bit now that yoga pants exist).

The only reason you aren't complaining about girls' B.O. is because girls just tend to stink less.
