Re: It's time for a video game thread!

I fucking love the Metro series. And I feel like you're about spot on with your ratings there. Nolan North as Pavel pretty much made the game for me.

I'd only give Skyrim 8.5/10 because once you're about 400 hours into it and trying to get those last trophies the quests start to really feel like grinding. Also the same 20 or so voices for everyone in the game really starts showing.

I'm also hella jelly you have a PC that can run Outlast decenty.

Don't really get the big deal about Outlast. It's not exactly the most graphically intensive game I've ever seen.

Well, it's one of the only true survival horror games to be made in the past 10 years. That's a Big God Damn Deal if you are like me, and that happens to be one of your favorite genres. Everything that's happened to Dead Space and Resident Evil has basically turned them into action games, and while they're still pretty fun, it's a bit of a sad day for people who liked the older titles.

The fact that it's been successful has actually paved the way for Alien: Isolation and other stuff to even be considered for AAA release.

Also, you fail to understand how cheap my laptop is.

Hopefully Isolation etc. will be better, because I'm really tired of Amnesia knockoffs. The most Outlast had going for it was that it reminded me very strongly of certain horror games from the early-to-mid-00s: Manhunt, Condemned, The Suffering, among a select few others. If it didn't have that I would have gotten bored very quickly. I like old-school survival horror games like Silent Hill and System Shock 2, same as you, and I do kind of feel sad at the rise of action horrors, even if I like some of them. But I really really don't like the route horror games have taken since Amnesia got popular, either.

Yeaaaah, I really don't either. It feels kind of lazy, in a way. Like the only way they can actually manage to keep a player anxious is to make them helpless and ineffectual.

I mean, say what you will about Dead Space and jump scares, but at least there were moments of visual and psychological horror in that series that were truly innovative and able to wear through the apparent agency you have as a player. And of course, Silent Hill (at least the older games) were absolutely perfect for this. They managed to create fear just through judicious use of atmosphere, despite giving you a totally capable character.

Not entirely sure I'd call Manhunt a horror game as much as it was a gore porn game (even though I really enjoyed it).

It's absolutely a horror game, though. It certainly meets the common qualifications for one. But you're right, it does tend to draw more inspiration from slasher flicks and the like.
