Thanks for mentioning duolingo.com. I love languages too and I like to study them on my own. I kind of doubt I'll ever be fluent in anything but English because I have too much fun hopping around from one fascinating language to the next but I'm okay with that.

I would love to learn Russian too. I know the Cyrillic alphabet at least. I've made a hobby out of teaching myself to write in various writing systems and that was one of the first ones I learned.

I've tried to do the same with writing systems but only with limited success. I still remember some Cyrillic but I didn't stick with it long enough to really get them down. And I'd really love to figure out the Arabic system, but it's overwhelming! I was actually most successful in middle school when I taught myself Tolkien's Tengwar, lol.

Arabic is actually one of the ones I've taught myself. I started with the Persian alphabet because I got into Iranian film and poetry.

Like most things, I've found the trick is just a lot (a loooooot) of practice. I just take random words and transcribe them into whatever alphabet or syllabary I'm working on. It's basically my version of doodling.

I'd love to learn Tengwar too. It looks so pretty.

Thanks again for mentioning Duolingo! I started doing the German lessons and I just got to level 4. I'm looking forward to seeing how much I remember tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see if I stick with this.

Glad you like it!!

One of the best aspects of it, in my opinion, is that it's really easy to just do a lesson or two (or lesson practice or two) if you don't have much time. And repetition is of course the most important part.
