The whole thing is last-minute. The worst part is, Evangeline Lilly quite firmly said she didn't want to do the role if... either if Tauriel ended up in a romantic subplot or in a love triangle, one of the two, don't remember precisely.

And they didn't. Yay!

And then they called her back and said, "Hey, so, we have some EXTRA scenes for you to shoot..." Suddenly, romantic subplot...

Kili/Tauriel was always on the cards - Evangeline Lilly was told about it when they offered her the job and the healing sequence was the first thing she ever shot. It was Legolas' inclusion that was the last minute addition.
