I went to the library today, and besides a bunch of books and cds, I borrowed the first season of Downton Abbey.

All I know about it is that it's some period piece about rich people problems, and I suspect I'm going to die of boredom. But I'm excited to sit down and watch it!

I feel like a lot of people go into Downton Abbey with the expectation it's going to be really serious. I think you should rather think of it as a soap opera. There's serious, but it's handled more like melodrama. You still might find it boring if you're not terribly into period dramas and/or the characters, or because the pacing is kinda terrible (although S1 is the best in that regard). But with a cast that large, there's a very good chance you'll find some favorites. And there are some really fun moments and surprises. Also Maggie Smith always getting the best lines.

Actually, the servants get their share of plot as well. And like inainthekingsroad said, it's basically a period soap opera. ALL THE DRAMATIC SHIT EVER.
