I really liked Penny/Sheldon too! (although I admit I ship it because I am a hopeless romantic) Their relationship was surprisingly equal--she didn't just tolerate his quirks, she learned to adapt to them and work with him (letting him get in all 3 knocks and 'Penny's, sometimes knocking back to tease him....) and he was condescending to her, but in a totally democratic way--like, he wasn't mocking her because she's a 'dumb blonde', but because he thinks everyone is a moron compared to him. They're similar in some essential areas and different in complementary ways. Love them as friends.

This, exactly this. There's more respect in that relationship than almost all the rest. They need to ditch Leonard (totally weighing them both down) and go on adorable adventures together.
