Just remembered that I saw him in some kind of jewelry advertisement and he was really cute in that, so maybe there's that?

He was in the hobbit, so I guess a lot of people are just discovering him for the first time.

People just have a lot of feelings about Thranduil, I guess. It was bound to happen eventually. (Especially with the way people freaked out over his short scene in the first Hobbit; he has a lot more screentime in DOS.)
