I kept driving. I couldn't stop in time, and my father always told me, never to swerve for animals, or you could end up killing other people or yourself.

It's true though, you don't stop for animals. You slow down, you try to stop but you don't swerve unless you're going ridiculously slow. Otherwise you're more likely to end up wrapped around a tree or hitting another car.

Slowing down and stopping to talk to the owner would be nice, but not compulsory.
