Re: Feminism MRA and Men

Don't be nervous. You took the time and courage to discuss this. I can respect that.

Okay, to me, I would call you a feminist. I'm of the belief that if you recognize women are treated unequally in comparison to men, think this is wrong, and want to change it, then you are a feminist. But here's the catch. I am not the ultimate authority on feminism. There isn't one and there never will be. I can't just tell you that you are a feminist and have it be true. It's a label you choose to don. If it something you choose to be, then you are. If you don't want to be, then you aren't.

Now, as for feminist spaces being welcoming for you, that is tricky. It's something that is a bit complicated and complex. So I apologize if I become confusing. So, feminist spaces. Let's start. You see, the movement wasn't exactly made to be welcoming for you. It should be, of course it should be, but technically feminism wasn't made for you. It was made for women. Because you are not at its focus you will never be considered first in priority. I'm sorry, but it's true. This doesn't mean you don't have an important place in it, you do. It also doesn't mean you don't belong, you do. What it means is that your part, as essential and needed as it is, is not the part that is most important. So you are not most important but you are important. Got it? Tell me if I need to explain this again in a different way.

So, as for how other feminist women treat you. You need to remember two things. 1) People are people no matter what they believe so there will always be assholes. 2) Feminism, while at its core is easy to describe and define, the moment you move to the details is becomes blurred. People start disagreeing on what is and is not sexist. People start arguing over effective forms and ways to instigate social change. People argue over everything.

When these two facts come together, it means you have a large human movement. (Like all other movements.) It also makes you come to the realization that you will never be completely compatible in mindset with everyone in the movement. Again, because humans. To give you an idea, I do not have completely compatible views on feminism with all other feminists. I have even disagreed with people in this very community. Does it mean that one of us isn't a feminist? No. It means we're human and trying to support the movement in the best way each of us knows how and it just so happens that both of us do it differently.

To add, if women are judging you before you open your mouth then you should find a new place to explore your feminism. These women are not ones who want or need your help so why push it? Go to women who want you there and it will be a mutually beneficial experience, in theory. Now, if women are judging you after you speak, maybe you should listen to what they are saying. (Especially if you hear the same criticism from multiple sources.) Maybe you are making them hostile in some way due to ignorance on you part. And you know what? That's okay. Everyone is learning and everyone starts somewhere.

Lastly, let me add something that has been helpful to me. It's my personal opinion and philosophy so you can take it or leave it as you please. Judging from what you have said to me it feels like you think feminism is something that is a rigid state of being. As if the moment a person becomes a feminist they can no longer be sexist or that if they are sexist, they were never a feminist to begin with. They're "fake". They don't belong. I, personally, don't think this is true. When I started being a feminist I made mistakes. I was sexist. However, I still was attempting to be a feminist and was sexist out of ignorance. Does that mean past me wasn't feminist because she made mistakes? No. It means I was learning. I was growing. The truth is, I still make mistakes. I still make sexist mistakes. However, I am still learning and I am still growing. I am still a feminist, despite my flaws. So my point is, you can still make mistakes and be a feminist. Other people around you can make mistakes and still be feminist. We're all growing here. Feminism isn't stagnant. It's something you grow into.

I hope I covered everything and I hope you found this helpful.

Hahaha, thank you. I just felt bad for taking so long to respond.

Also, this is, like, the most I've written in one post in a long time so my own post is making me go: TL;DR. @_@
