I'd think so. Maybe the people making the adaptations are assuming the majority of viewers won't have so they should stick to the most well known characters?

They might also be assuming Holmes fans will check out any new adaptations anyway so they don't need to cater to people who know Violet Hunter, Elsie Cubitt, Charles Milverton etc. were also in the books.
