Ohhh an excuse to post this: You are hereby warned about me complaining and so on:

I broke my tooth during Christmas Dinner, and my idiot of a Father is not helping me pay for dentists appointments, so I am already 200$ broker, and I still have left to get my Wisdom tooth (or teeth) removed. Because when I break something I break the most expensive fucking tooth in my mouth! So I will have to pay about 400$ to get one of them removed and my dentist said that I might have to get all four wisdom teeth pulled...

On top of that I spent 100$ on prescriptions and had to get new glasses so that was 150$ for those of you counting I spent 400$ in less than two weeks, and I am just hating life...

And that is before buying my books for class and my buss card thing, so I am pretty much broke... Hopefully my extra scholarship application will go through, because if it doesn't I don't know how I will be able to pay for the dentist.

And my bastard of an idiotic father is not paying for any of this, because he is an idiot and does not understand that he has a daughter that lives on her student loans which isn't a lot... It isn't like he can't afford to help me a bit, my mother on the other hand is buying me a bow!*

And nope, Norway does not have Free Dental care after you turn 18 or glasses ever (with some exceptions), because that would be a good thing...

*Before you say: "you could just use that money on dentists" Here is my reply: I can't, my mother is buying me a bow so I get an "after school" activity, and it is either the bow or nothing.

...I'm not all here because I read your capitalized Father and seriously thought for a moment you were calling out god for not helping pay your medical bills. :D

Is there any way the dentist will take payments?

...As an nonbeliever that would be mighty blasphemist of me. But who knows? My father knows a lot of people...

Probably, but I prefer to just pay upfront... I might have to take my friends mother up on her offer to cover the removal of my wisdom teeth. Somehow it will work out. I just might have to wait until over Summer break to get it done. as it stands I won't get an appointment at the Jaw Surgeon* before May so I will just delay it until after Summer break. My tooth doesn't hurt and it is temporarily fixed so as long as the filling holds and no infection sets in I am at the bottom of the waiting list... (If I have to go to the Hospital it will be free I think, so I am halfway hoping they will have to put me under)...

I am mostly angry at my father really, because he should understand that I can't really afford the Dental bills...

*which is the direct translation from Norwegian, Dental Surgeon is probably what you use?

Ouch! I hope next month turns out to be better for you! I'm guessing dentist, but I've never had surgery on my jaw, so the phrase might well be 'dental surgeon'.

It will come with its own unique issues I am sure, but hopefully not bad for my bank account...

Not dentist, it is probably dental surgeon, I just used Jaw Surgeon because it sounded funny in my head, I have no idea what s/he does, but apparently they are the only ones that can take out Wisdom teeth, because if my dentist could do it I would have just used her. I also went to a specialist when I had my braces that time with the name of: Jaw Expert. It is probably smart to mention that Jaw have a slightly broader meaning in daily Norwegian than English.

I think we call them oral surgeons. That is what I was referred to at least.

In the US, it'd probably be translated as oral surgeon because that's who removed all of my wisdom teeth.

Is there some issue with your wisdom teeth? Like - are they hurting you, is the enamel screwed up so they have bad cavities, stuff like that? Or do they just see wisdom teeth and go 'oh, those have to come out!'

If they're not actually hurting you/screwing up your other teeth, just ignore 'em for now. I didn't get mine removed until it became obvious that the enamel was shot and they were getting bad cavities. Otherwise, they would have been just fine.

Good luck!

I broke one of them, so it is covered by a temporary filling*, the ones in the bottom are both under my gums, but fully grown out so they are basically only creating opportunities for me to get cavities in the teeth next to it.

My dentist would not have referred me to the specialist if she didn't think it had to be done, as they don't work together because the surgeon is employed by the state and she is not.

She didn't know how many of them I would have to remove, only that the one I broke has to go, but she assumed he would prefer to get the rest as one broke straight off without any kind of reason, except eating normal food. So I dunno how many they will remove in the end... Hopefully only the broken one, as I quite like my teeth where they are!

*And the nerve is exposed under it.

Exposed nerve.
*shudders*

Good luck. Too many dentists really take advantage, and people freak out about their teeth. Glad you feel confident in their diagnosis.

IA with wisdom teeth being one of those areas where doctors might get shady. My mother said when she was a child the local pediatrician had her and a lot of the neighbor kids have their tonsils removed *just in case*.

Most of my friends had their wisdom teeth taken out as a purely preventative measure. My oral surgeon at least admitted it wasn't likely I would ever have an issue with my upper wisdom teeth and the reason he wanted the lower ones removed was due to the proximity of their roots to my nerve potentially causing problems.

Yeah, a lot of people did the tonsil thing when i was a kid. I still have mine - i never had all the issues with strep throat and stuff so many people seem/ed to have.

Yeah, that 'potentially' can be tricky.....

I'd definitely try to save some money on books by renting, buying used, buying older editions, finding a free alternative online, sharing a book with someone else, etc, if you can. (But being able to do that depends on what type of classes you are taking: I've had teachers whose tests came only from their lectures/powerpoints, and others who asked questions only from the book! It's a mad world.)

I wish you luck on your money/family situation! And ouch, four teeth at the same time is what I went through. It ached a lot in the days following the surgery, and the gauze had a texture that just felt wrong in my mouth. Take care and good luck!

Already bought my books, but that was not an unknown money thing so didn't complain about it. I will probably get an PhD in the end so I kinda need my books for that, or at least when I am writing my Masters. But thank you for the advice!

Thanks, it will work out in the end, it always does. Yeah not looking forward to it, but at least it wont be before May at the earliest, if I don't lose my temporary filling, then they will have to do it.
