Out of context fandom

What are somethings in fandom or series you follow that you think you'd have trouble explaining to someone not familiar with them?

Also an excuse to post images and links, given they're not super NSFW.

....Wat.

Chicken corpses. Ave Maria begins to play as they softly float.

Fucking Japan.

Holy shit. This is beautiful. Another anime has joined my to-be-watched list. Thank you!

Well. That's certainly a thing I saw today.

Idk. To me - who doesn't watch anime that often and has never heard of this one - that's just a clever gag scene parodying that type of OTT melodramatic action scene, e.g. the final fight sequence in Face/Off that is so earnestly and confusingly full of doves. In this case the camera 'shots' are a play on gun shots.

Correct me if I've interpreted the joke in this wrong!

Now that I think about it, ship wars. You have to really be involved with fandom to understand the intensity of them. And even then, I've gotta say, I've been in shipwar-happy fandoms since 2000 and still don't really get them.

All of the really weird Supernatural episodes involving Gabriel.

There's this angel that likes to fuck with people, especially Sam and Dean. Sometimes he has a reason but always he wants to have fun at the expense of others.

Doctor Who

Just...Doctor Who.

things that involve time-travel in general, tbh!

True, that. Before I got into DW I had friends who liked it, and I read the Georgia Nicolson series which had multiple references to it, but I didn't really... get it until I saw it for myself.

Mpreg. A/B/O. Kinkmemes. RPS. Hermaphrodite!Satyr!Loki (if you don't know, v. NSFW: http://lokisergi.tumblr.com/post/43910489111/under-base-please-click-the-above-image-for).

So basically all the weird kinky shit in fandom - not that kinks in general are hard to explain, but idiosyncratic fandom kinks might take a lot of 'prep', shall we way, before you can just come out with them in normal conversation.

I would say Homestuck, but a six-year-old friend of mine once asked me about my Homestuck poster and I was able to give her a surprisingly coherent and age-appropriate explanation.

How angels work in Supernatural. Grace, falling, exactly what an angel's essential "self" IS, etc. The canon is ridiculously unclear, and in some cases comes perilously close to contradicting itself.

I've tried to explain Rumpelstiltskin's love life (from Once Upon A Time) to my mother. The whole 'his wife ran off with a pirate in the middle of a war leaving their son to be later conscripted, so he murdered her' part is relatively okay, but 'his second love literally ripped her own heart out rather than love him' is rather less so, because then you have to hurriedly explain that no, no, she didn't die, there was magic, and look, you kind of have to see Cora to believe her ...

By the time we got to Belle and the whole 'she kissed him and it almost stole his power so he threw her out, and then someone told him she was dead and he went a little (more) insane, and then there was a timestop, and then turns out she's not dead, and then she gets shot and loses her memory and doesn't love him anymore, and then he gets her back only to have to go off on a fatal mission', my mother gave up and just went "So it's basically a fantasy soap opera, then?".

At which point I've given up and am basically going "Yes, yes it is."
