Gormenghast is pretty famous for its gorgeous prose. Literally never seen anyone condemn it (well, except for the books after 2). OP is hanging out with the wrong crowd.

(Also wondering how anyone could hate the story. It's uproarious, horrifying, heartwrenching, poetic...)

I found every character so isolated and depressed... it was suffocating? My boyfriend loves them so I do hear about how great it is. I know I'm sensitive to that sort of thing and I was in a fairly shitty place when I read it, so I wouldn't say I hate it. I just remember it as unpleasant, despite the beautiful imagery.

Yeah, that was pretty much the point, I think. That tradition had suffocated the Castle to the point where Steerpike's actions, as utterly and truly horrifying as they were, at least managed to kickstart something approaching change. Doesn't leave you in a good place, though, since you're caught between either the suffocating relentlessness of a pointless tradition or the horror of an escalating cruelty.

It's fantastic, but you've got to be in the right place for it.

That's what made me so attached to them, I think. They all had such strong, warped personalities, despite their oppressive surroundings.

I'm chronically depressed myself but Gormenghast is always very comforting to me. It's strange how differently things affect people.
