It's a good 'un! I love a nice Picard-centered ep, I'm so easy.

So the theory of the ep DONT BE SPOILED IF U HAVENT SEEN IM GONNA TELL STUFF OK OK

is that Picard kinda gets It's-a-wonderful-life'd into what he'd be today if he hadn't been a punkass ensign who got in a bar fight and was stabbed through the heart
(basically he would be kinda timid and directionless)

and I like the whole theme but I was also like hey, if he can only change because he has knowledge of another timeline that's kinda sad. so I went with the idea that maybe Q didn't so much invent a whole new universe for Picard as kinda borrow another reality for a while (this is never spelled out in my fic mind you, just worldbuilding) and so that Lieutenant Picard kinda wakes up one day from Captain Picard dreams and is like "Hey bein a BAMF boss is pretty rad I kinda dig it" and starts idk being more involved and driven and shit. probably he saves the day once or twice. idk man I just love alternate reality stuff.

OMG YES, I LOVE IT. That sounds great! Maybe he has a recurring dream and something in it turns out to help him save the day? That would be pretty cool.
