Have you seen old episodes of Doctor Who? Hell even episodes from Nine and Ten's run look terrible now (production and story wise).

As far as story goes, they're fine. The production part? What do you expect from BBC and their limited budget? It's not like Hollywood with their almost unlimited talent pool and deeper pockets. You can practically open a window in Hollywood and yell, "I need someone to make me a CGI spaceship worthy of Lucas" and have a half a dozen voices yell back, "I'll do it!"
