explaining "my friend is trans" is something you really shouldn't do when you make a pronoun slip about a real person, unless they have explicitly given you permission.

But if you're not using their name, and the person you're talking to doesn't know who you're talking ABOUT, what's the issue? "My friend" doesn't exactly give anything away, unless you only have one friend or something.

It could make other people think it's okay to casually talk about the trans identities of their own friends, regardless of whether they're strangers or mutual acquaintances of the people being talked to about them.

I had this assumption myself once. Then I talked about a friend and found out I was wrong.
