What the fuck is this story? What kind of school do you go to where a professor gives a single shit if you're late for class, or even spends the time to get an explanation (and wastes valuable class time) instead of just taking a student number and having the person explain themselves after class?

I mean, I'm a trans person, and this just sounds like a load of bullshit. Also, if I didn't know "Bob" I probably would have verbally fucked him in the ass for being enough of a shitlord to come late to class and waste everyone's time and lie about it. I don't give a fuck about his idiot excuses.

Professors give a shit because it's disruptive and rude.

And it's less disruptive to waste ten minutes listening to this Bob guy talk out of his butt?

I'm with the Anon above you. It's a complete waste of time. Bob should've just slipped into his seat, got out his supplies, and not interrupted class. If it was such a small class that it would've been disruptive regardless, he should've apologized and not wasted anyone's time with his garbage.

Either way, Bob sounds like a jerk.

OP, here. As I mentioned elsewhere, I simplified a lot of events to make this post shorter. I think I probably should have left this part as complicated as the original, in which it wasn't actually in the middle of class Bob was talking to his professor. I think it was during office hours or after class, and there was some long series of events in between the actual tardiness and talking to the professor about it, events had to do with why he was bothering to talk about it anyway. At the time, this didn't seem important, so I just said "late to class, then started talking".

It probably would've made several posters more likely to focus on other aspects of your story, yeah. But frankly, that doesn't make Bob sound better. Now he sounds like a perpetually tardy jerk who's trying not have his grade dropped (or just be dropped from the class, period) who can't or won't take responsibility for his poor choices. I know that you like Bob but he's still wasting his professor's time. (And yeah, I'm more interested in the professor than anyone else in this story.)

OP, here. I did mention at the beginning this was actually a series of events and a bit of hypothetical, that I'd boiled down to a single cohesive event for the sake of simplicity. Trying to explain the whole thing as it actually happened would have taken three comments and made the situation much harder to understand/not made it any clearer.

And...what kind of school do you go to where professors don't care that you're late? o.O

DA--I go to a school where of course some professors care if you're late. What they don't care about is why you're late, unless maybe you come in on crutches, or covered in blood, or wearing a cast or a neck brace. The ones that care generally take attendance and then, after a certain number of tardies/absences (usually counted as the same thing) they'll drop your grade. The few professors that don't care don't bother with attendance records. Instead, their exams will only be passable if you show up consistently. Usually they give pop-quizzes and stuff too. The professors that care about attendance tend, in my experience, to teach classes where if their students were really good at the subject being taught, they could get amazing grades just by turning in all the assigned work, without ever showing for class. Studio stuff like fashion design and production, acting classes with scene work, stuff like that. So they want to make sure that the really talented students don't just get to show up once a month and still ace the class while the mediocre students busting their asses pull straight Cs.

Well, as a prof, if you teach at a university that has an attendance policy (which many do), attendance affects enrollment in the class and the grade earned in the class. In addition, when students are tardy, it's extremely disruptive. I actually have a "no tardy only absences" policy because without it, I get a string of students coming into class for the first thirty minutes, some of whom make a huge production of doing so. I do not engage students during class time about their tardiness or their absences, but I do give many shits (a whole diarrhea bowl full) if my students are absent or tardy. Another reason I give a shit about absences is that I want to help students who are absent for legitimate reasons stay current in the class and not get behind on their assignments.

Ugh, I hate people who think it's funny to make a whole circus number out of entering class late. At my uni, people were slightly late all the time because we had to commute between two or more campi, and as soon as you didn't get out on time in one class, you were sure to be late for the next. That was common knowledge and profs didn't really care unless you were more than 5 to 10 minutes late. But common practice would have been quietly opening the door and ducking to your seat with an apologetic look on your face, not marching in getting celebrated for being late.
