My take is that his lie wasn't making fun of trans people, and didn't provide enough information to out anyone, real or imagined; he didn't give any more information than one might by saying, "I have a friend who is trans." I am certainly in no position to be an authority on what trans people should find offensive, but it's not the sort of thing that would prompt me to leap into white-knight mode.

The thing the guy in your story really did wrong was over-explain his lie. The more unnecessary detail you give, the more likely the listener is to realize you're lying. "My ride got lost" would have been completely sufficient.

Hence the whole "clever way to get out of a bind" bit. Seeing as he did over explain himself, it seemed like a creative way to get out of that accidental over-explanation, and everyone I knew found it funny as well until that one person I mentioned (Cis-Bi).

Yeah, it was at least a vaguely clever way to get out of being caught in his lie, though I'm not sure it actually made it all the way to "funny" (idk, maybe he's just that good a story-teller?). But I don't think there was a reasonable way to interpret it as offensive unless he was actually cackling about how he used the existence of trans people to wriggle out of his own fib.
