Temp agencies, or they have connections. But since they're characters, it's probably the author forcing them into whatever suits their need.

I feel you OP. I grew up in a small town, and, for some reason, I believed all those shows that had characters who lived in the middle of nowhere easily getting odd jobs that paid for everything.

Wish filfulment! Also, it's sometimes easier (& more interesting for the reader) to make things less realistic. People would find it boring to read about the character searching fruitlessly for jobs and getting a ton of rejection letters and sitting on their computer all day in their pajamas.

If only it were that easy in real life, eh? Also how there seem to be so many young, attractive experts in careers that take years to establish oneself in.

It's because they're fictional characters.

That's how they get jobs so fast.

Or they're already really rich, in which case they'll have connections, agencies, etc. to help them out.

But mostly it's because they're fictional characters and/or in a setting in which jobs are in abundance.

Lilo and Stitch is the only thing that came to mind when I was trying to think of a fictional character struggling to find a job. You're right OP, it is annoying as hell trying to find work when the media tells us that all you have to do is circle something in the newspaper.

It really depends on where you live, what field you're in, the amount of experience and background you have, and whether or not you have connections. My friend is in the IT field and when she put up her resume on Monster, she got something like five companies calling her in the first week.

So no, it's not necessarily unrealistic at all.

Agreed. My job makes me want to kill myself but I can't find another one :/

Oh gosh, where do you live that you think the experience of characters on telly would realistically match that of yours? (If that's what you're saying?) There are many places with an abundance of jobs, I'm sorry you don't live near any. :/

Maybe it's because I'm not job-hunting, bit those sort of characters make me think in a slightly different direction: Why can't they keep a job?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. In my experience, it's really hard to lose a job unless you're doing something really egregious, like being late every day, stealing, or something on that level. I've had far too many coworkers who should have been fired but weren't. :\
