Yes! F!S finally coming through with its true purpose: telling us something you have to get out but can't say aloud.

Anyhoo, damn that's wild.

Yes, this is a good secret.

If that were my boss, I'd think she was fantastic. I don't know if I'd ask her about it, though. Some fandom things are better staying on the internet.

This secret is great btw

Oh man that is awkward! Are you friends or friendly with the author or just know of them? Are they a bnf? Pretty wild either way.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never understood why discovering that someone you know IRL is in fandom should be such a hugely embarrassing thing. If you don't feel comfortable sharing that part of your life with your boss, or you think it would be unprofessional to make a fandom connection in your workplace, then by all means, don't mention it to her (either directly IRL or to the online identity you suspect to be hers), but why should simply knowing that this person has the exact same dorky hobby as you do be such a source of embarrassment?

Unless it's a matter of, "I can't read her porn now without picturing my boss and that's awkward," in which case, fair enough I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think OP is weirded out just by the fact that their boss maybe writes hardcore porn.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just hazarding a guess here... but I think it has less to do with their boss being in fandom (which they kinda already knew about), and more to do with the fact that their boss writes explicit smut.

And that they have probably read the explicit smut.

And possibly even enjoyed it.

I'd have trouble looking them in the eye, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm a bit weird insofar as I don't tend to get tremendously embarrassed by sex things, but I think I'd find it more awkward if I didn't enjoy the smut. Then I'd have to live with the knowledge that my boss writes bad porn.

Well, I think some people just like to keep their fandom life and their real life separate. I know I wouldn't want my co-workers to know about my (pretty tame) fannish activities and I definitely wouldn't want to know about theirs.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I'd be so freaked out I would have to consider changing jobs, but that's only because my boss is a very douchy person, with very volatile temperament, and who likes to torture people with cheeky comments when she's pissed, which happens often.

But then again, I have a very strict personal policy of never, ever check anything fanish online while at work...

Aaaand that's why I always have multiple accounts, and I'm glad I've been paranoid since day 1 on Internet.

Are you close enough to your boss that it might be possible one day to mention it?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)

+1 tho sadly I have RL reasons to be paranoid on the Internet. :-(

That's funny as fuck.

I'm sorry I'm laughing at your situation, OP. Just try to ignore it and put it behind you, I guess?

If this happened to me I think I would be startled, feel a bit awkward, then laugh hysterically. Er...at least you know you have a lot in common with her? NGL, I think that's kind of awesome but I can see how it might be weird for you.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so a few days on - I find the whole thing to be hysterically funny, with a healthy side of awkward. I've already decided that I'm never going to try to find out one way or the other. Knowing could make things weird with my boss, and I really adore her. And if it's not... that kills a pretty amusing story.

I haven't really interacted with the author in question, we're kind of in different spheres of the fandom. I'm here mostly for the found family/ awesome adventure/casefic stuff. Though what I have read of her's, I enjoyed... a lot... which brings us right back around to awkward.

It could be worse. At least you know they're not producing reams of poorly-spelled drek featuring characters who think superglue makes a dandy personal lubricant.

You sound wise.

I would be thrilled. Sometimes I wonder if my prof is into fandom. She likes Britney Spears a lot.

I'm jealous, OP!

I have a friend who will only read my fanfiction, because she knows her mom writes it, but doesn't know what she writes under and doesn't want to accidentally read her mom's stuff. (And we're in our 30s.) It can be weird knowing you've read someone's hardcore explicit stuff and know them in real life.
