There is no good time for the hot water heater to break

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sears can't install a replacement before ten days out. I am trying to decide whether to work out some way to shower in cold water or call a neighbor to beg for their shower. Or I suppose a bath with stove-heated water, but we don't use the tub very often.

Damn appliances.

I'd suggest heating water in a pot or somesuch, then mixing it with cooler water so as to reach the optimal temperature, and then kind of pouring yourself with it. Like you do in a sauna. That's what I always do, and it's much easier than filling the actual tub with water.

With it being so effing cold lately, it's not necessarily a good response but sometimes (when I'm in a rush), I wash my hair in the sink. It might be a last ditch solution?

I've lived with cold water for a couple of months. My tip is to put in in a 2 litre water bottle and pour it over you, in the shower - once before and once after you soap up. That way you limit your exposure to the cold.

Hair washing really needs at least warm water. You can do this in the sink by using kettles. Dunk and shampoo your hair in the sink. Then get a plastic cup and rinse over your head with water from another bucket of clean warm water. Repeat as needed for conditioner.

It's a faff but I got used to it surprisingly quickly. It was almost an anticlimax when the hot water came back.

Local public leisure centres/gyms/swimming pools are a good source of showers but I never really needed them.

augh, this is so first-world-problemy but I am with you. I once lived for three months in a place with no hot water. It was a very warm place, and I really didn't mind the overall modesty of the home and general lack of luxury, but I never really adjusted to the cold-spigot-and-bucket showers.

Maybe you can go and buy some of those portable camping showers? That way you can boil some water and get a half-decent warm shower even if it doesn't last long.

Not long ago, my water heater died. Because there were a huge number of actual plumbing emergencies (burst pipes, no-heat calls) at the time, I had to wait over a week for the plumber, and I hate cold showers, so I bathed in water I heated on the stove. What worked for me may work for you.

I didn't try to fill up the tub, but poured the water over myself from plastic water jugs. I used three 1-gallon jugs, filled them not quite half full with cold tapwater, and filled them the rest of the way with stove-heated water. I used a smaller bottle for washing my face. You can adjust the temperature as you prefer: a little less hot water in the mix for when you're washing your hair, a little more for when you're washing the rest of you.

You'd be surprised how well it works.
