Things to do in DFW

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm going on a first date in a few days and I was wondering if anyone knew of some fun cheap/free things to do in the DFW area that would make for a fun time. It's probably a bit sad that I've lived here my entire life and still barely know anything about it but there you go

na

eh, I assume people familiar with the area would understand what "DFW" means and OP seems to be seeking out people from the area so...I guess it works out

Isn't that a rather large overall area?

Dallas/Ft. Worth is a really big area, and you haven't mentioned what your interests are, your age (just a rough idea, say above or below 21) or other details that might help people narrow suggestions down a bit. It's hard to recommend something when we don't know what you'd consider "fun". That said, if you're starting off with almost zero information, a guide book isn't a bad place to start:

Colleges also often have free or cheap entertainment... concerts, indie bands, art exhibits, stuff like that.

Just an idea, but the next time you ask a question, go ahead and type out all the abbreviations, too. It won't take that long, and you're far more likely to get helpful responses if people can see what you want in a glance. It also makes it easier for people to help you, and you totally want to make it as easy as you can because you're asking for a favor, right? Good luck, OP.

Cultural things:
- the Kimbell museum in Fort Worth, which is currently showing a great exhibition of European modern art (pay, not super-cheap but worth the price). It has a permanent collection which is free, and the building itself is a work of art.

- Fort Worth Botanic Gardens (mostly free), which aren't in the best of displays because it's winter, but the Japanese garden (cheap) is always worth seeing

- Dallas World Aquarium. Rather expensive but the word "aquarium" doesn't do the place justice. Think of a block of warehouses, turned into intensely packed and multileveled nature preserve. Get there early and spend all day.

- The Flying Saucer, a bar with locations all over the place (the one in Sundance Square in Ft. Worth is the best IMO). Gigantinormous beer selection, friendly staff, and good food. Sometimes free live music.

- Neighborhoods to walk around in Dallas: Cedar Springs, Deep Ellum, West End. CS is a gay-friendly party area, Deep Ellum artsier and more laid-back, West End great for people-watching and interesting food.

Off the top of my head, here's what I got.

DALLAS Deep Ellum. Which consists of Elm Street and Main which house various clubs, bars, and shops. There's plenty of restaurants that have all types of food, and there's lots of live bands on Fridays and Saturdays.

Greenville Avenue/Henderson/Knox Street. Famous for their antique shops and vintage clothing stores.

FT. WORTH The Stockyards and all things associated with it. If old west sin't your cuppa tea there's plenty of rock n roll and dive bars in the area. Lola's Saloon has good drinks and even better sound for the variety of bands that play there. There's also the Basement Bar, The Rail Club, and lots of other music venues and bars (heads up: smoking is allowed in bars and clubs in FTW) Basically 6th and 7th Street are the place to be.
