It does help people search for your fics. Law of averages, if a fic comes up on a search then it's more likely to be clicked.

So the use of many tags can relate to fics gaining popularity.

But on the other hand, as I've seen many times on fs, there are other readers who hate tags. Probably just better doing what you're comfortable with. You're going to (hopefully) attract readers who have similar tastes to your own, anyway.
