Weirdly enough, even though I'm a big slash fan, I never really liked any yaoi manga or anime. They always bored the shit out of me.

Yeah, there's a lot of bad/formulaic BL out there. But every so often you come across one that stands out and it is really good. If you are looking for good BL manga, I can rec you some! If not, I can slink back into the bushes.

Hell yeah son! I love reccing things. :B

Yume Musubi Koi Musubi/Bond of Dreams, Bond of Love: One of my favorites, a very non-stereotypical yaoi with great characters. A high schooler has a sex dream about his older friend, a Shinto priest, and decides he wants to bang him. His friend is reluctant. Things progress from there.
Sorenari ni Shinken Nandesu: A single father taking care of his daughter gradually becomes closer to a customer at the restaurant where he works.
Konbini-kun: Super cute one. A hikikomori tries breaking out of his shell by getting a job at a convenience store, but is intimidated by one of his coworkers until he realizes there's another side to the guy.
Kimi Note: A boy with self-esteem issues is attracted to his classmate's scent. Also contains a lot of cute side stories. (I'd really recommend anything by Junko, who wrote this and the previous one; I love her style and her work's adorable.)
Summer Switch: A young man returns home for the summer from college in the big city. Things get awkward around his best friend, whom he kissed when they were younger. A short one, but I like the character dynamics (the main character's kind of a big, soft-spoken guy, and his friend's a loudmouth delinquent).
Kankei wa Mada LV. 1/The First Stage of Love: If you don't mind the occasionally yaoi-hands style, this is a handful of several super cute and fluffy stories that involve, for example, a dude who used to be a shota worrying that his partner doesn't find him as cute as he used to, or (my personal favorite) a fat kid who doesn't know how to take his friend's confession to him.

These are a few of my favorites, anyway! I hope maybe you will enjoy them. c:

lol, I forgot about "yaoi hands"! I have to re-find that Tumblr, it was hilarious.

Also, thanks for the recs!

Seconding all of the ones on this list that I've read (haven't read the last two), and adding works by Yamamoto Kotetsuko like Honto Yajuu and Konya mo Nemurenai.

Her work isn't the most original, but her storylines are hilarious, her romantic comedy truly romantic comedy, and her characters all endearing. Easily my favorite mangaka.

I'd also like to thank you for the recommendations. There are some lovely stories here!

Aww, you're welcome! I really appreciate that you liked them. ♥

You should check out Fumi Yoshinaga's Antique Bakery (http://www.mangago.com/read-manga/antique_bakery/) or practically anything by Fujiyama Hyouta (http://www.mangago.com/read-manga/rakka_sokudo/). Granted, Antique Bakery isn't explicitly yaoi since romance is not the object of the story, but it's really wonderful. Fujiyama Hyouta is excellent in terms of realistic, slowly building relationships with sweet, touching moments. She's one of my favorites.

Oh, woah, I didn't expect to get multiple replies. Thanks!

Oh man, I love Antique Bakery so much it is just CRAZY. Have you watched the Korean live action? It's pretty damn weird, but fun.
Have you read any of Ooku? It's by the same person. It's a historical drama, set in an alternate Japan where (about a century before the story started) a plague wiped out most of the male population, so most of the gender roles have been inverted! It's really interesting, and very pretty too.

i like the formula tbh, but i will try not to rec the ones i found very typical...

endless world http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=34471 it's... not exactly a romance. dark themes. but good.

kimi ni ageru http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=51543 i like it mostly because of the art tbh, but the story is pretty cute. hooray for second chances

mainichi seiten http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=846 plot-wise not exactly unique but its notable for being family-centric, not just romance. and i really like it

wait for me at udagawachou http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=75399 kinda creepy but i like it this way...? but i like it for the self-realization.

x+y http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=7483 part of a shoujo seires omnibus. but hey it's old school, sci-fi, AND written by a pillar of BL! please check out hagio moto's other BL too.

ryuu no yuigon http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=4846 it's old and actually pretty simple in most respects, but i enjoy it as a pick-me-up. and hey, dragons.

code: leviathan http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=73072 speaking of dragons. barely started but the dragons make up for it.

dining bar akira http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=7213 i like because of the tone. awkward adult dude romance, very slice of life.

what did you eat yesterday? http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=15332 i almost don't wanna rec because someone already mentioned yoshinaga fumi (whom you should really check out!) basically just a chronicle of a middle-aged couple's daily meals.

itoshi no nekokke http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=53311 stars another established couple, which is surprisingly rare. fucking cute basically.

orrr if you want un-formulaic as in... weird stuff, like possessed talking penises, mpreg dinosaur shapeshifters, high school girls becoming old men, or vibrator companies... i can do that too.

I'm a huge slash fan too and hate the formulaic BL stuff, but there are some gems! I've been out of the scene for a few years though, so these are a few years old.

(Gravitation is terrible IMO, and Junjou is like the iddiest of idfic XD)

Some of my faves:
Kuma to interi by basso (politician and his lover!)

Don’t Stay Gold by Yoneda Kou -- I can't remember what it's about, but I've always loved Yoneda Kou cos she does very masculine characters.

Sakuhin Number 20 by Est Em and anything she draws, basically.

Garden (the compilation, not the oneshot) by Kotobuki Tarako - amazing worldbuilding, time travel etc

The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese by Mizushiro Setona - angsty as fuck, one of my favourites. Has to deal with sexuality/heteronormativity issues

I recommend you go by author if you liked any work! I like Yamashita Tomoko for her interesting stories. Fujiyama Hyouta like someone mentioned specializes is romantic/fluffy stuff.

You're welcome! :) I tend to prefer stories that are less cutesy and focus on other things than the romance haha, so that might show a bit.
