In my experience, it is very interesting because it allows one to see the appearance of a character/historical figure without all the white noise of personal interactions, moods, facial expressions, et c.

To put it simply, one sees how they look instead of seeing an incomprehensible mixture of their looks and their personality (which is what usually happens when you interact with living people). A curious experience.

Also, in wax museums one can see someone they'd never see in real life? It's awesome.

Ah yes, I get that, but my experience with this kind of things has been... well, I can never get past the 'this person stading in front of me is made out of wax and has plastic eyes, how weird' mindset.
It doesn't work for everyone is what I'm trying to say.
